Blurred Legalities

2024
Serie of 13 paintings, watercolour and ink on paper, each 42 x 60 cm

‘Blurred Legalities’ serves as a continuation of artist exploration into the intricate dynamics of urban life and post-war transformation, following his celebrated project “Above Everyone.” This new series delves deeper into the complexities of urban development and legality in Kosovo, presenting a nuanced commentary on the intersections of legality, necessity, and aesthetics.

Through the medium of watercolour, “Blurred Legalities” depicts hybrid structures—unauthorized “penthouses” constructed atop existing buildings. These additions reflect a phenomenon born out of post-war scarcity, shifting urban needs, and often ambiguous legal frameworks. The paintings capture the unique interplay between functionality and informality, highlighting how necessity can reshape skylines.

Unlike the stark contrasts explored in “Above Everyone,” the boundaries between what is legal and illegal in “Blurred Legalities” are subtly woven into the fabric of urban architecture. The façade’s aging colour schemes and weathered textures further complicate distinctions, blending notions of permanence and transience. This visual and conceptual ambiguity invites viewers to reconsider their perceptions of legality and urban resilience in a rapidly evolving post-conflict landscape.
